If you go on to have more than one child, following the birth of your second or subsequent child(ren), it can be difficult for the older child(ren) to go back to nursery, even if they had no issues before.
The idea that the baby is now having their parent’s attention while they are sent off to nursery can be difficult and all they want to do is stay with you.
It can also be very tempting to keep your older child at home with you while you are off with the new baby, but there are some definite benefits to continuing to keep your older child in nursery. There is a lot of adjustment for all of you when a baby is born, even more so for your older child, who until now has been used to having their parents all to themselves, now they have to share.
Keeping the consistency of nursery helps your older child as they have that stability while their home life has changed.
They will get to see their friends and spend time doing what they love in an environment they are used to and also have time away from the new baby.
It is also a great opportunity for you to have special one-on-one time with the new addition which is equally as important.
Your nursery will be used to the changes that come along with having a new sibling and so if you have any concerns, talk to your child’s nursery first as they may already be preparing your child for the arrival of their brother or sister.
They may have some tips on how to help your child cope with the changes and may also as your older child to introduce the new baby to their friends at nursery.
It may also help having a photo of your new baby for your older child to take in with them as if they are feeling sad, they can look at the photo. While your older child is away you too can adjust to being a parent of two or more.
Having a newborn is exhausting at the best of times, but when you have another child too with their own schedule, it can be difficult to find any time for yourself or even the basics like sleep.
Make the most of the time your older child is at nursery and when baby sleeps, you should too – you need to look after yourself so that you can look after your little ones.
